Called upon to ensure the population's food supply, the preservation of natural resources, the upkeep of the cultivated landscape, decentralised settlement and animal welfare, the Swiss agricultural sector reconciles the contradictory demands of various societal expectations. The 'Economic Modelling and Policy Analysis' Research Group uses economic models and empirical methods to evaluate the impacts of agricultural policy tools on societal objectives and highlights trade-offs.
We use the agent-based agricultural sector model SWISSland to forecast the impacts of policy changes on behalf of the Federal Office for Agriculture in Switzerland. We are looking for a researcher in the field of agricultural policy analysis and agent-based modelling.

Your tasks

  • Working on the further development of our sectoral forecasting models
  • Maintaining and managing the SWISSland model environment
  • Conducting studies on the impact of agricultural policy scenarios
  • Publishing your results in international journals
  • Participating in the acquisition of third-party funding

The 'Sustainability Assessment and Agricultural Management' Research Division develops decision-making bases to help policy-makers create optimal framework conditions for a competitive and multifunctional Swiss agricultural sector. The analysis of a wide range of data from the agriculture and food sector enables the identification of promising operating strategies and policy measures. The Research Division deals with issues concerning digitalisation in agriculture.

Agroscope is the Swiss federal centre of excellence for research in the agriculture and food sector. Its researchers work at a number of sites in Switzerland. Headquartered in Bern-Liebefeld (as of 2026: Posieux), Agroscope is attached to the Swiss Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER.

Your profile

  • University degree and PhD in agricultural economics/economics
  • Experience with optimisation models and familiarity with GAMS
  • Experience of publishing in international journals with peer review
  • Performance-oriented, team player
  • Knowledge of two official languages of Switzerland and excellent English
