PostDoc Position in Neuroimmunology Engineering and the Institute of Translational Bioengineering (3 years)

The Position

The Roche Institute of Translational Bioengineering (ITB) and the Neuroscience and Rare Disease (NRD) Discovery Translation Area (DTA) are looking for a postdoctoral scientist (completed a PhD) to join our team at the interface of basic academic and translational research in the area of Human Neuroimmunology Engineering.

A major focus area of the ITB and NRD DTA is to establish robust and relevant human central nervous system (CNS) in vitro systems.  This project will bring together expertise in neuroimmunology, bioengineering, and computational biology to establish a complex human-based system for the purpose of supporting CNS drug discovery in the area of myelination/remyelination. The successful candidate will work under the joint supervision of established scientists both from NRD and ITB, with an attractive portfolio of preclinical and clinical stage projects in CNS disorders. The position will be based in Basel, Switzerland. During the postdoc you will:

  • Establish human iPSC-derived culture systems suitable for studying myelination.

  • Establish a high-fidelity human cell-derived myelinating culture system amenable to high-throughput screening of compounds that promote myelination.

  • Conduct high-content imaging and analysis, molecular biology and biochemistry experiments, and single-cell genomic experiments.

  • Plan, design, execute, and document experiments, analyse data and present results at lab meetings.

  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team of engineers and data scientists to establish such a culture system.

This position presents the unique opportunity to gain first-hand insight into discovery research at a leading pharmaceutical company. We expect outstanding motivation, creativity, analytical thinking and a strong dedication to productivity.

Who you are

Your career interests are in glia/neurobiology/neuroscience and you are motivated to learn new techniques to explore mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders.

Moreover you:

  • must have obtained a PhD no later than 4 years ago

  • have in vitro molecular and cellular experimental experience, with cell culture experience and knowledge of myelin biology a strong plus;

  • have a good command of English

  • are able to work in a team setting and in a multicultural environment.

Information about application documents and starting date:

The preferred start date of the position is August 2022. Please clearly indicate your preferred starting date of the position in your motivation letter. Applications need to include a CV and a motivation letter plus contact information for 3 references.
