The Position
Student Internship (m/w/d) in Analytical Research & Development with Focus on Structure Elucidation (100%, 9-12 months)
At Roche, we believe it's urgent to deliver medical solutions right now - even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients' lives. We are courageous in both decision and action. And we believe that good business means a better world. That is why we come to work each day. We commit ourselves to scientific rigour, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.
The Analytical Research & Development department (PTDC-A) is part of Global Technical Development (PTD) and responsible for analyzing drug substances and dosage forms of synthetic molecule development products. The ultimate goal of our work is a robust control strategy to release pharmaceutical products for clinical trials, and finally for commercial supply.
The ?Hyphenated & Special Technologies (HST)? section provides key scientific customer support with Mass Spectrometry (MS), separation sciences and innovative special technologies.
More than 15 mass spectrometry experts in HST verify the safety and quality of our synthetic drug substances and drug products by identity testing, characterization and quantification of any type of impurities.
Structure elucidation of small organic molecules is of paramount importance to help understand synthesis processes, degradation pathways or other factors that affect product quality. In many cases, high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS/MS) is the method of choice to obtain detailed information about impurities in drug substance or drug product samples quickly - often with the help of sophisticated software tools.
As an intern you will support the structure elucidation topic utilizing LC-MS/MS on various state-of-the art instruments and, amongst others, will have the following tasks:
- Structure elucidation of unknown impurities in samples from e.g. process development, forced degradation studies, troubleshootings, etc.
- Investigation of ESI-MS adduct formation
- Establishment of System Suitability Test (SST) protocols
- Implementation of software workflows to support automated data analysis
Who you are:
We are looking for a candidate with an education in analytical chemistry and a bachelor/master degree in chemistry, pharmacy, food chemistry or in an equivalent field and a strong interest in analytical chemistry and high-resolution mass spectrometry coupled with liquid chromatography.
The following skills are regarded as equally important:
- Strong ability to work in a team as well as independently
- Curious mindset & driven to constantly improve established workflows
- Pragmatic, solution-oriented work style and good communication skills
- Critical, ?outside the box? thinking
- An interest in digital transformation topics and IT applications (MS software, GeneData Expressionist®, Python, etc.) is a big plus.
- Very good knowledge of spoken and written English; basics of German are of advantage.
Your complete application includes the following documents:
- A current CV and a Motivation Letter
- A certificate of enrollment (if you are currently studying)
- For Non-EU/EFTA citizens: Due to regulations, you must provide a certificate issued by your university stating that an Internship is mandatory for your studies. Failure to do so will result in your application not being considered further
- If you want to use this opportunity to do a Master's or Diploma thesis, please highlight this in your application.
Are you ready to apply? We are looking for someone who thinks beyond the job offered - someone who knows that this position can be a rare springboard to many other opportunities at Roche. When applying for this position, already project yourself in the future. Think about what could come next and how you would like to build your future.
