PhD Student Gene Therapy

 

The Position

We are seeking a motivated PhD student to join the Applied Viral and Non-Viral Technology group in Basel. Embedded in Therapeutic Modalities (TMo) department in pRED we aim to enable the transformative potential of gene therapy as a medicine. 

Your project will involve the improvement of viral vector production and associated costs through investigation of AAV and cell biology. As a PhD student you will of course be able to shape the direction your research takes with support from peers and mentors with a strong track record in the gene therapy space. You will be exposed to a multitude of experimental techniques and are encouraged to work on your professional and scientific development. 

The PhD project is established in collaboration with the Hannover Medical School. You will be based at the Roche Innovation Center Basel (RICB) and will be stimulated to embrace the collaboration between the various stakeholders at Roche, Genentech and Spark.   

In this position you will:

  • Establish yourself as an expert in AAV biology

  • Perform experiments in the development, optimization, and scale-up of recombinant adeno-associated viral vector (rAAV) production processes.

  • Participating in scientific discussions regarding wet lab experiment and analysis

  • Present your work internally and at external conferences

You have experience and expertise in the following:

  • Hold a MSc in (molecular) biology, biochemistry, medicine or similar.

  • Research experience and a track record demonstrating an interest in gene therapy research.

If you also bring many of the following skills and competencies, we are looking forward to receiving your application:

  • Previous experience in gene therapy is a plus.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a strong team spirit, and like to work in international teams.

  • Excellent written and spoken English skills.

The duration of the PhD project is initially set for three years, with the possibility of extension. The start date of this position is Q3 2023.
