The position
Pharmaceutical Sciences (PS) is a global function within Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED). As a team member in Predictive Modelling and Data Analytics (PMDA) chapter of PS, you will work in close collaboration with scientists in pRED, using state-of-the-art bioinformatics and biostatistics tools and methods. You will focus on exploratory research project focused on the integration of microbiome and human genetics data across different disease indications.
In this position you will:
Investigate genetic data of disease and healthy individuals.
Implement microbiome data analysis.
Integrate metagenomics and human genomics data through the use of various computational tools and, in particular, develop Mendelian Randomization (MR) methods and the use of Polygenic Risk Scores (PRS).
Apply combined analysis of genomic and microbiome data to better understand their interplay in the context of disease areas of Roche's interest (immunology, oncology and neuroscience) and contribute to the better understanding of the disease biology.
Collaborate with biologists, geneticists and clinicians and proactively share learnings and knowledge to support the development of the wider Roche community.
One of the key aims of the position is to advance basic science and technologies that will be published in top-rated, peer-reviewed scientific journals, if necessary preceded by priority patent applications.
The duration of the position is set for two years. You will be based in Basel, Switzerland.
You are a computational biologist with a postgraduate scientific degree (PhD) in the field of human genomics and/or metagenomics.
You also have experience and expertise in the following:
Python, R or at least one programming language
Advanced statistics, causal inference and, favorably, machine learning methods
Working with bioinformatics tools and methods
Experience and expertise in the following counts as a plus:
Biology in one of the disease indications of Roche interests (oncology, immunology, neuroscience)
Dealing with genomics large scale cohort data (e.g., UK BioBank)
Strong experience with metagenomics tools and microbiome data
You have very good interpersonal and communication skills, are able to build good working relationships, and are an outstanding teammate. Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to design, perform, and interpret experiments, and to embark on new scientific methodologies.
You have been actively engaged in scientific research continuously (documented through publication co-authorships) and ready to start a postdoctoral activity having obtained your PhD no later than 4 years ago.
