The Position
At Roche, we believe it's urgent to deliver medical solutions right now - even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients' lives, and we are fearless in both making decisions and taking action. And we believe that good business means a better world.
That is why we come to work each day. We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.
The Predictive Modeling and Data Analysis (PMDA) team at Roche is seeking an intern who is pursuing an MSc/PhD degree in computational biology, computer science, and relevant fields. The intern will work in a multidisciplinary team to develop and apply causality-informed machine-learning methods to understand drug-induced toxicity and adverse events. Specifically, the intern will explore the possibility of causally linking in vitro pharmacology of drugs and clinical adverse events by considering pharmacokinetic data, tissue- and cell-type specific gene expression, and biological networks.
The position is funded for 6 months, however it can be combined with another 3-month position with similar requirements for skill sets. Please indicate your availability.
Your impact:
Collaborating with a small team of 2-3 colleagues to prepare data and biological knowledgebase required for this and future projects in a findable, accessible, interoperable and reproducible (FAIR) way;
Building, benchmarking, and interpreting machine-learning models to discover, validate or refute causal paths between drug targets and adverse effects;
Contributing to an emerging software toolbox of computational toxicology with software packages and pipelines;
You are someone who is:
Pursuing a bachelor, master or Ph.D. degree in bioinformatics, cheminformatics, computer science, biomedicine, biological sciences or a related discipline, (or have recently graduated- within the last 12 months);
Experienced in applying computational methods to address questions in biology, chemistry, pharmacology, or toxicology, demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications;
Proficient in programming with Python, demonstrated by contributions to open-source software projects;
Skilled in causal inference and interpretable graph neural networks;
Constantly striving for high-quality work, readable and reusable code, and effective oral and written communication;
Motivated to work in a multidisciplinary team;
Excellent, spoken and written English.
To be considered, please send us your complete application merged into one PDF including
A Motivation Letter (including desired start date & duration)
CV, containing links to at least one open-source project that we can access
A certificate of enrollment (if you are currently studying)
For non-EU/EFTA citizens: Certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory (required due to regulations)
We'd like to let you know that for this recruitment process we are going to invite you to an Online Assessment in case a first review of your application was successful.
