PhD in Modeling and Simulation (start date Q1 2021, 3 years)

At Roche, we believe it's urgent to deliver medical solutions right now - even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients' lives and we are fearless in both making decisions and taking action. And we believe that good business means a better world.

That is why we come to work each day. We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and access to medical innovations for all. We do this today to build a better tomorrow. We are proud of who we are, what we do, and how we do it. We are many, working as one across functions, across companies, and across the world.

In Translational Modeling and Simulation, we are supporting early research and development with mathematical modeling, with the aim to enhance understanding of disease biology and inform the selection of the right molecules for development. We design innovative and quantitative approaches to predict molecules efficacy and safety, by integrating pharmacological and toxicological data from the early stages of development. We develop quantitative predictions to translate preclinical findings to the patients to ensure the optimal conduct of clinical studies.

A position is available within the Translational Modeling and Simulation group for a PhD student to work on advancing physiologically based pharmacokinetic modeling for non-CYP substrates.

Your responsibilities during the PhD

  • Perform literature review to collect in silico, in vitro and clinical pharmacokinetic data and develop a strategy for verification of models for drug types where there are gaps in current prediction approaches.

  • Develop physiologically based pharmacokinetic models for selected reference drugs, perform rigorous verification and develop strategies and best practices to improve predictions for the drug types where current approaches are inadequate

  • Write scientific publications on the work performed and present at scientific meetings

  • Work mainly within Roche with regular discussion and close collaboration to our academic mentor. Some time may be spent at the University for training and meetings.

Who you are

You are an enrolled student in a PhD program with focus on mathematical modeling and interest in drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics (DMPK) and pharmacodynamics (PD). ?You have a strong interest in translational approaches leveraging in vitro data and mechanistic models.  Some experience with physiologically based modelling is an advantage.

Moreover, you are

  • interested in learning new modeling technics, developing expertise in PBPK model platforms and understanding in vitro technologies and their translation

  • proficient in English

  • passionate for working in a dynamic and team environment with a strong cross-functional component (in silico, in vitro, in vivo)

The starting date of this internship is in Q1 2021. Please clearly indicate your preferred starting date in your cover letter.

To be considered, please send us your complete application merged into one PDF including

  • CV

  • Motivation Letter (including desired starting date)

  • A certificate of enrollment (if you are currently studying)

  • For non-EU/EFTA citizens: Certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory (required due to regulations)

Are you ready to apply? We are looking for someone who thinks beyond the job offered - someone who knows that this position can be a rare springboard to many other opportunities at Roche. When applying for this position, already project yourself in the future. Think about what could come next and how you would like to build your future.
