At Roche, we believe it's urgent to deliver medical solutions right now - even as we develop innovations for the future. We are passionate about transforming patients' lives, and we are fearless in both making decisions and taking action. And we believe that good business means a better world.
The Biostatistics department is located in Basel and consists a team of about 60 statisticians. As strategic partners in drug development, we apply our drug development and statistical expertise to the design of clinical development plans, clinical studies, and non-clinical experiments.
In our department we offer four different projects that can be tackled within this internship. Please indicate all topics you're interested in in your application.
Your main tasks will include:
Topic 1: Modeling of ?drop-out? during clinical trial in Alzheimer's Disease
Familiarize yourself with basic concepts of clinical trial conduct and clinical trial datasets
Familiarize yourself with the concept of Estimand
Familiarize yourself with models for joint modeling of time to event and longitudinal data
Using data from recent clinical trial, perform descriptive exploratory analysis of drop-out and apply modeling approach to understand and potentially predict drop-out. Understanding the association between drop-out and other information collected during the study is of particular interest.
You are expected to summarize the outcome of your work in a written report and to give a short presentation in one of our departmental meetings
Topic 2: Exploring the minimum conditions required to obtain reliable individual estimates of the shrinkage and re-growth parameters of tumor kinetic model in early development oncology
Familiarize yourself with tumor kinetic models, the estimation of the shrinkage, regrowth and time to regrowth and the tumor equilibrium constant
The main objective of this internship will be to determine the minimum conditions required to obtain reliable individual estimates of the tumor kinetic model parameters
To this aim, clinical trials will be simulated to mimic different early phase cancer trial design scenarios (e.g. high or low inter-individual variability, large or moderate drug effect, various lesion size time profiles)
The impact of smaller vs larger sample size will also be investigated
Topic 3: The analysis of streaming data from process information (PI) systems in technical development and manufacturing
to get familiar with the environment and the data collected in technical development and manufacturing
to explore caveats and benefits of means for digesting, storing, and retrieving massive data
to explore the best statistical practices in Real Time Monitoring
Topic 4: Estimands and their practical implementation in the analysis of clinical trials
Review of the recent literature on estimators for longitudinal endpoints. This includes a detailed assessment of the targeted estimand and the required assumptions for consistent estimation
Implement the methods if they are not already available in statistical software, e.g., R.
Carry out simulation studies mimicking typical trials to understand and compare the properties of different estimators
Explore the utility of bootstrapping to assess the statistical validity of the procedures
Who you are

Moreover, you are
An ambitious student who is currently enrolled with a minimum of three years undergraduate training in statistics (Bachelor in Mathematics, Statistics or equivalent fields with a strong focus on applied statistics)
Advanced in programming in R and experienced in Bayesian/MCMC methods and statistics is a plus
Proficient in English (both spoken and written)
To be considered, please send us your complete application merged into one PDF including
CV
Motivation Letter including desired starting date, duration and preferred topic(s)
A certificate of enrollment (if you are currently studying)
For non-EU/EFTA citizens: Certificate from the university stating that an internship is mandatory(required due to regulations)
Are you ready to apply? We are looking for someone who thinks beyond the job offered - someone who knows that this position can be a rare springboard to many other opportunities at Roche.
